People seek treatment from an osteopath for a wide range of conditions. Some of the more common ones are listed here.
Osteopathy is over 100 years old and was first developed by an army medic called Andrew Taylor Still in America. It is a complete system of health care with a core belief that the body is its own medicine chest and that promotion of good blood supply to the tissues through movement and adequate nutrition, will heal injuries.
The osteopath will take a full history of your health and condition and examine you fully during your first consultation. Techniques such as soft tissue, joint manipulation and mobilisation will be used to treat the problem area, supplemented with exercise & lifestyle advice. The overall aim is to achieve balance within the tissues and promote good health.
Developed in China over 1000 years ago, acupuncture is a complete healthcare system that aims to access the body’s energy (Qi) via specific points on channels mapped on the body.
A full history of your health, sleep, diet and other aspects is taken. Your pulses, tongue and tissue state will be looked at too. Fine steel needles are inserted into specific points tailored to the patient, in order to stimulate energy movement to or from areas of the body in order to achieve a balanced energy state.
The acupuncturist may use glass cups placed on to the skin, and a moxa herb may be burned on the needles if required to further stimulate the Qi.
Dietary advice may be given if necessary.

Sports massage is a form of deep tissue massage primarily aimed at treating injuries to the muscles and tendons.
You do not have to be a sports person to benefit from this type of massage and we do not believe in “no pain, no gain”. If a massage is overly painful then it is not helping.
Each treatment is tailored to the patients’ needs and degree of injury etc. You may be given exercise & lifestyle advice to take away too.

Taping and strapping has been used for many years and most people have seen sports players emerging from the changing rooms with strips of bright coloured tape adorning their limbs.
Kinesio tape is adhesive elastic tape that is applied to muscles or joints in order to give dynamic support and pain relief. It was originally developed in Japan in 1979 and was introduced to Europe in 1996.
The tape is very lightweight, latex free and comfortable to wear and will stay on for several days despite sweating and showering. The tape works by lifting the skin away from pain receptors and creates a pathway for the drainage of bruising and swelling within the tissues.
The elastic properties of the tape means it is not restrictive and is easy to remove. Applied around a joint, the tape will provide good support and stability and these properties can also be used to correct posture.
To use this tape, you should be a Certified Kinesio Tape practitioner, which involves attending an 8 hour course.
